Hybrid driver shares why going fully electric would have been the better choice.

Many drivers choose a hybrid because it feels like a “safe first step” into electrified driving. But as electric vehicle technology matures, and with charging infrastructure expanding rapidly across the UK, more people are discovering they didn’t need the halfway house after all.
To explore this, we sat down with Javan, a driver who bought a hybrid, expecting it to ease the transition to electric, only to realise he should have gone fully electric from the start. His experience highlights why going straight to electric can be simpler, smoother, and more efficient than many think.
I thought it would be a sensible first step into electric driving. It felt like a safer option, and I assumed the petrol backup would be essential for longer journeys.
I was unsure about going fully electric. I didn’t know anyone with an electric car at the time, and had heard a lot of mixed information about range and charging. I assumed it would be difficult to travel far and didn’t realise how well developed the EV charging infrastructure actually is now.
I do regret not going fully electric. I didn’t realise how limited the electric range is in a hybrid. We try to use electric as much as possible, but because the range is so small, we end up charging it every day, which becomes inconvenient.
Driving in electric mode is incredibly smooth and quiet. It really stands out. When the petrol engine kicks in, it feels noticeably louder, even though it’s not excessive. I now try to stay in electric mode as much as possible and only use petrol when I have to, for longer journeys.
We mainly charge at home as we have an EV charge point, so we don’t rely on public charging often. However, having the hybrid has made us more aware of how many public EV charge points there are. Our car shows nearby locations on the map, and there are far more than we expected in everyday places.
Yes, completely. I didn’t think electric cars could go very far, but after doing more research since owning a hybrid, I’ve realised that most modern EVs offer more than enough range for typical day-to-day driving.
Yes, without hesitation. It’s a much nicer driving experience, and it’s more practical than we expected. Running costs are also lower than we assumed. Our energy provider offers cheaper rates overnight, so we can charge at home at a lower cost, which makes a big difference.
